Camponotus pilicornis is a large species, highly distinctive due to its orange coloration, that inhabits dry, sunny locations.

It feeds on sugary liquids and small insects. It is a shy, nocturnal species. Nuptial flights take place in late summer, and queens typically do not lay eggs until the following spring. Once the queen lays her first eggs, it is important to disturb her as little as possible, as she will not hesitate to eat them if she feels threatened.

It is a species that requires low humidity inside the nest, so it is always advisable to provide an external water source.
